Appalachian Coalition Member, Appalachian Gold’s Mama’s Meat Sauce
Appalachian Gold is a social enterprise focused on revitalizing rural Appalachian communities through sustainable farming and economic development. By partnering with local farmers, they promote the cultivation of heritage crops and organic produce, which helps preserve traditional agricultural practices while boosting the local economy. Appalachian Gold also creates jobs, provides training for underserved populations, and supports food security initiatives. Through their commitment to environmental stewardship and community empowerment, they help build a more resilient, self-sustaining future for the Appalachian region. Born in the late 1800s in Uniontown, Alabama, the strong, no-nonsense matriarch, Grandma Penny, crafted the first batch of Mama’s Meat (barbeque) Sauce as a matter of resourcefulness and in a streak of Black brilliance. Likely off the plantation or very near to it, Grandma Penny began the rich legacy of making something out of nothing, infusing flavor and love into lesser cuts of meat, using Mama’s Meat Sauce.

Black Belt Coalition Member, Y’all Company’s Mississippi Comeback Sauce
The Taste: Replace your ranch with this creamy concoction. Made with creamy mayo, creole mustard & creole seasonings.
The History: Whether you’ve been runnin’ all over hell’s half acre or movin’ slower than a Sunday afternoon, this deep south sauce will call you back over the river time and again.
The story goes that Comeback Sauce was first served by the Dennery family after World War 2 when they opened up a Greek restaurant in Jackson, Mississippi. In fact, neighbors are still ordering it there still today and grinnin’ like a possum when it gets to the table. Ain’t no tellin’ what the true recipe is since there are more versions of this recipe than mudcats in the Mississippi, but it always seems to include mayonnaise, garlic, chili sauce, and paprika. People smother it on literally everything. It probably helps them forget how humid it is. It has even been known to convert many a self-proclaimed “ranch dressing person”.
Besides being endlessly versatile, this Queen Mother of condiments offers a classic combination of flavors that somehow makes everything from seafood to frog hair taste heavenly. But remember, like any good Mother she will summon you home. And by home, we mean anywhere Mississippi Comeback Sauce happens to live.
Y’all Company - It all started in Sunday school. Josh McGee and Paige Harlow met and became friends through Highland Baptist Church in Louisville, KY. These black sheep Baptist became fast friends and connected over a love of the South, a taste for bourbon and they both cuss a little. After finding themselves underwhelmed by the corporate world and wanting to create something that added a little more flavor in the world, they began their journey of sauce-making. Josh, with his culinary background, and Paige with a talent for graphic design they launched Y’all Company at the Cobblestone Farmer’s Market in Winston-Salem, NC in April of 2018 and have been at it ever since, carefully crafting sauces to highlight the flavors of each Southern state! As we believe doing good in the world is just the right thing to do, we give back 5% of our sales to our partners in effort to eliminate rural poverty and create economic stability for future generations to come!
Delta Coalition Member, Beau Jacks’ Hush Puppy Mix
Hush Puppy Mix - Jerry “Beau Jack” Vaughn is well known for the hush puppies he makes using his mother, Ms. Odean’s recipe. For years, he has been asked to cook them at all types of events, starting from Meridian, Mississippi, and moving far beyond! Beau Jack and his wife, Pat, were working with their small group at church, looking for a fundraiser. Knowing that everyone loved Beau Jack’s hush puppies, the pastor’s wife suggested they bag the mix and sell it at Earth’s Bounty farmer’s market. They settled on making 50 bags. Earth’s Bounty opened at 8 o’clock, and by 10, all the mix had been sold, and people wanted more. They knew they were onto something! For several years, Beau Jack and Pat continued at Earth’s Bounty, expanding to other events around the state. During this time they introduced other family recipes – Fish, Chicken, Deer Steak, Seafood Batter, and French Fry Batter. Customers gladly welcomed 100 years of family recipes that Beau Jack and Pat shared. At the end of 2019 they moved into retail markets and found immediate success. Upon retirement, Beau Jack and Pat approached Together for Hope and asked us to take the company and run with it to make a difference in rural communities throughout the state.
